Premium cataract surgery in Kolkata: fewer glasses after your operation

Standard cataract surgery gives you clear distance vision and reading glasses. Premium lenses can also correct astigmatism or give you near and intermediate vision. Dr. Das, a premium cataract surgeon, will tell you honestly whether one is worth it for your eyes.

What makes a lens "premium"

Every cataract operation replaces the cloudy natural lens with a clear artificial one (an IOL). A standard monofocal lens focuses at one distance. Premium lenses do more:

  • Toric: corrects astigmatism (cylindrical power), so distance vision is sharp without cylinder in your glasses.
  • EDOF (extended depth of focus): clear from distance to computer range with few night-time halos.
  • Multifocal / trifocal: far, intermediate and near focus, so most people manage the day without glasses.

Who is a good candidate

  • Healthy retina and optic nerve (no advanced glaucoma, macular degeneration or diabetic macular swelling)
  • A real wish to depend less on glasses, and realistic expectations
  • Cylinder above about 1–1.5 D (for toric)
  • Willingness to accept some glare or halos at night (multifocal)
Honest advice: a premium lens is not automatically better. If your eye has other disease, a good monofocal lens can give better quality of vision. Dr. Das will say so if that applies to you.

Extra tests before a premium lens

  1. Optical biometry to calculate lens power precisely
  2. Corneal topography to measure astigmatism and corneal shape
  3. OCT scan of the macula to make sure the retina can use the lens
  4. A discussion of your work, hobbies and night driving

Cost

Premium lenses typically add ₹15,000 to ₹80,000 per eye over a standard lens, depending on type and brand. Insurance usually pays up to its cataract limit, and you pay the difference. See cataract surgery cost in Kolkata.

Questions

Is a multifocal lens worth it?

For people with healthy eyes who strongly want to avoid glasses, often yes. For heavy night drivers or people with retina or nerve disease, a monofocal or EDOF lens is usually the better choice.

Can I get a premium lens under insurance?

Insurance usually pays up to your policy's cataract limit. You pay the difference for the premium lens.

Can astigmatism be corrected during cataract surgery?

Yes. A toric lens corrects astigmatism at the same time as the cataract is removed.
