Retina care in Kolkata
The retina is the thin layer of nerve tissue at the back of the eye that turns light into sight. Problems there, from diabetes, age or a tear, often start without pain, and some need treatment within hours. Spectra Eye Hospital's retina team handles diagnosis, laser and injections, and arranges vitreoretinal surgery when it is needed.
Conditions treated
- Diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema: leaking or blocked vessels from long-standing diabetes
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): blurred or bent central vision in older adults; the "wet" type needs injections
- Retinal vein occlusion: a blocked vein, often linked to blood pressure
- Retinal tears and detachment: an emergency. See floaters and flashes
- Central serous retinopathy: fluid under the retina, common in stressed working adults
- Retinopathy of prematurity: screening for premature babies
Tests
Most retina problems are found with a dilated examination: drops widen the pupil so the doctor can see the whole retina. OCT is a painless scan that maps the retina's layers in micrometres, and is how macular swelling is measured and followed. Fundus photographs record the retina for comparison at the next visit.
Treatments
- Anti-VEGF injections into the eye under numbing drops, for wet AMD, diabetic macular oedema and vein occlusions. Usually monthly at first, then spaced out.
- Laser to seal leaks, treat oxygen-starved retina, or wall off a tear before it becomes a detachment.
- Vitrectomy and detachment surgery, arranged with a vitreoretinal surgeon when needed.
Questions
How often should a diabetic get a retina check?
Once a year at least, more often if changes are found or during pregnancy.
Are retina injections painful?
The eye is numbed with drops first. Most people feel pressure for a second, not pain.
Can a retinal detachment be fixed?
Usually, with surgery. The sooner it is repaired, the better the vision that is saved.
