Retinal detachment রেটিনা সরে যাওয়া

Retinal detachment: an eye emergency you should know the signs of

When the retina peels away from the back of the eye, the part that has come off stops working. Repaired quickly, especially before the centre (the macula) comes off, most eyes keep far more vision. The warning signs are sudden: new floaters, flashes of light, and a shadow or curtain spreading across your vision.

Who is at higher risk

  • Short-sighted people, especially with high minus power
  • After cataract surgery or an eye injury
  • A detachment in the other eye, or in the family
  • Diabetic eye disease with scar tissue

Signs, and what to do

  1. Sudden new floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow from one side
  2. Call +91 98308 73460 and come the same day. Don't wait to see if it settles
  3. Avoid heavy exertion until you are examined

Treatment

  • Retinal tear without detachment: laser (or freezing) around the tear in the clinic, to seal it before fluid gets under it
  • Detachment: surgery, usually within days. Vitrectomy removes the gel pulling on the retina; a scleral buckle supports the wall of the eye; a gas bubble holds the retina in place while it heals, which may need a set head position for some days

Surgery is arranged with a vitreoretinal surgeon. See retina care.

Questions

Is retinal detachment an emergency?

Yes. See an eye doctor the same day you notice flashes, a shower of floaters or a curtain.

Can a detached retina heal by itself?

No. It needs laser or surgery.

Will my vision return after surgery?

It depends mostly on whether the macula was detached and for how long. Early repair gives the best results.
