ICL: glasses removal when laser isn't the right fit
An ICL (implantable contact lens, a type of phakic IOL) is a thin, soft lens placed inside the eye, in front of your natural lens. Nothing is removed from the cornea, which makes it the usual choice for high power, thin corneas, or eyes not suited to LASIK or SMILE. It can be taken out if ever needed.
Who an ICL suits
- High myopia, often beyond about −8 to −10 D, and some high cylinder or plus power
- A cornea too thin or irregular for laser reshaping
- Age roughly 21–45, power stable
- Enough space inside the eye (anterior chamber depth) and a healthy endothelial cell count, both measured beforehand
The procedure
- Measurements decide the lens size and power; the lens is ordered for your eye.
- On the day: numbing drops, then the folded lens goes in through a 3 mm opening and unfolds behind the iris.
- Eyes are done one at a time, the second usually within a week.
Recovery and risks
Vision is often clear by the next day. Drops are used for a few weeks, and eye pressure is checked at follow-ups. Uncommon risks include raised pressure, early cataract and infection, which is why lens sizing and follow-up matter. If your eyes change later, the lens can be removed or exchanged.
ICL or laser?
For moderate power with a healthy cornea, laser (SMILE Pro or Femto-LASIK) is simpler and costs less. For high power, an ICL often gives sharper vision and leaves the cornea untouched. See the comparison.
The first step is a LASIK assessment with Dr. Das at Chinar Park (about 2 hours, with dilation). Call +91 98308 73460 or book online.
Questions
Is ICL surgery safe?
Yes, in properly selected eyes with correct sizing and regular follow-up.
Can the ICL be felt in the eye?
No. It sits inside the eye and cannot be felt or seen by others.
How long does an ICL last?
It is designed to stay in permanently, but it can be removed if needed, for example at cataract surgery later in life.
What does ICL surgery cost in Kolkata?
More than laser, because the lens is custom-made. See current prices.
