LASIK, SMILE Pro or ICL: which one suits your eyes?
All three remove the need for glasses, in different ways. Which one is safest for you depends on your power, corneal thickness and shape, dry eye, age and lifestyle. Here is the honest comparison Dr. Das goes through at the assessment.
Side by side
| Femto-LASIK | SMILE / SMILE Pro | ICL | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How | Laser flap, cornea reshaped beneath | Tissue removed through a 2–3 mm keyhole | Lens placed inside the eye |
| Flap | Yes | No | No corneal change |
| Minus power | Up to about −8 to −10 D | Up to about −10 D | High power, often beyond −10 D |
| Plus power | Yes, up to about +6 D | Limited | Yes |
| Dry eye afterwards | Common for a few months | Usually less | Least |
| Contact sports | Flap can be dislodged by hard injury | No flap concern | No flap concern |
| Back to work | Next day | 1–2 days | A few days |
| Reversible | No | No | Yes |
| Cost | Mid | Higher | Highest |
Ranges are typical, not limits for every eye. Prices: LASIK cost in Kolkata.
How the choice is made
- Topography and thickness rule out keratoconus and show how much tissue can safely be used.
- Your power, including cylinder, and whether it is minus or plus.
- Dry eye: SMILE or ICL may be kinder.
- Lifestyle: boxing, martial arts, police and forces lean towards no flap.
- Age: after about 40–45, near vision and the natural lens come into the decision.

Questions
Which is safest: LASIK, SMILE or ICL?
The safest is the one your eyes are suited to. Each is very safe in the right eye and risky in the wrong one, which is why the assessment matters more than the brand name.
Which gives the best vision?
In suitable eyes, all three commonly give 6/6 vision. For high power, an ICL often gives sharper vision than laser.
